Chinese brush painting has been practiced for thousands of years and focuses on a mastery of water and balance, rather than the properties of paint. In an attempt to capture the qi (or essense / spirit) of the subject, the painter moves with quick, decisive movements that must be methodical, yet spontaneous. Priority is given to a lively composition that's full of energy, over realism and detail.

Each stroke is laid down on rice paper once–quickly, confidently. You cannot go back and forth over the same spot to correct a mistake. These Meditative works are done with hand-ground pigments and liquid watercolor on various types of rice paper.

Hard line, Chinese brush painting, and printmaking technique pieces done espressly for illustration work. A variety of bold, expressive pieces done largely for magazines, books, and blogs. Spot illustrations also included.

Artist trading cards are an internet-born meme, not unlike the small works of traded art originally shared by the Impressionists. All artist trading cards measure 2 1/2" x 3 1/2", roughly the size of a traditional baseball card.

I find their miniature, focused canvas size to challenging and engaging.

Pieces from my "Yin Series" of Chinese brush paintings, exploring heavily cast shadows on unfamiliar (and familiar) terrain. The "shadowed" side of the yin yan, connected to ancient Chinese iconography.
