                                          I teach a variety of interesting arts & humanities courses through the University of New Mexico AND through my private studio. View the list below to see all of the classes I'm currently offering, as well as those which are frequently offered but not scheduled yet.

                                          Current UNM Classes

                                          I offer an assortment of art and humanities courses through UNM Continuing Education. I am, however, taking a hiatus from most of them--in order to focus on other work. I am currently only offering Tao and Zen through UNM this spring (2011), but you can expect additional courses, some new, in Summer and Fall.

                                          "Tao" literally means "the path" or "the way." Find your own way through the deep, philosophical world of Taoist thought as you learn about cultivating inner peace, going with the flow, and practicing compassion, simplicity and patience. Taoism is the oldest form of Chinese philosophical and religious thought and it still brings enlightenment and peace to millions in the modern world. Tao and Zen will introduce students of all interest levels to the world of Taoism; concepts, history, schools of thought, modern practice, the Taoist arts (Qi Gong, Tai Chi, etc.), tales, artwork, and heroes.


                                          This course is open to anyone, regardless of age, spiritual experience, or personal religious choice. The journey of a thousand miles begin with one step...

                                          Painted Mini Tapestry Workshop

                                          Painted Mini Tapestry Workshop

                                          Typically used for decorating t-shirts and tote bags, fabric paint opens a world of possibilities beyond wearable art - including gorgeous wall hangings and tapestries! In this workshop we will create beautiful wall hangings with fabric, paper, and fabric paints. We'll explore new ways to use t-shirt paint, fabric watercolors, fabric pens, and other paints and materials directly on fabric. Develop designs that can be hung with rods, wire, or cording. Students may bring their own preferred supplies, but supplies and tools are provided.

                                          Students wishing to sew buttons or fabric squares onto their wall pieces should bring needles and thread.


                                          Awakening the Artistic Mind Workshop

                                          Awakening the Artistic Mind

                                          This fun, engaging workshop will allow you to set your inner artist free, even if you thought you didn't have one! We'll explore and experiment with a variety of artistic mediums, including paint, pencil, pastel, collage, stamping, marker, mixed media, and more! Great for those who have always admired art form afar but were too afraid to give it a shot. Low-stress environment fosters creativity in a free and unrestricted way. Learn how to think like an artist and let artistic ideas emerge.

                                          Find an artistic medium that speaks to you. Create several mini-projects designed to get your creative juices flowing! $15 materials fee due on the first day of class, for all materials and supplies. Students do not need to bring materials, but they may do so if they have supplies they have been dying to try, or if they wish to trade supplies with other students.

                                          Intro to Drawing

                                          Whether you've taken a class or two on drawing and just want to refine your skills, or if you've never even tried to draw a stick figure-this engaging, hands-on course will acquaint the interested student with all the things you need to know to start pencil drawing like a pro! Students will learn about different pencil types, and when to use them, shading, cross-hatching, ellipses, shadowing, layering techniques, lead techniques, erasing techniques, and more. Pencils and paper are provided, but students are encouraged to bring their own pencils, and a drawing pad so that they can practice at home. This is an energetic, hands-on art class for people of all artistic levels.

                                          We will primarily use pencil, but will also cover charcoal and drawing crayons.

                                          Intro to Portrait Drawing

                                          Intro to Portrait Drawing

                                          This fun, hands-on drawing course is designed for those who wish to learn how to draw realistic, accurate portraits of people. Bring your favorite drawing pad and pencils and learn techniques for creating realistic facial features, mastering balance, using light & shadow, developing skin texture, defining hair, and more. We'll even cover a variety of tricks to make drawing an accurate likeness easier than you ever thought possible. We will draw from live models as well as photos, with discussion about the unique challenges. It's helpful to have some drawing experience for this course, as we will not be covering drawing basics-but it's OK if you've never drawn people before, or have just graduated from stick figures. The instructor will provide paper and pencils, but students are encouraged to bring their favorite materials if they already draw often. For students of any level. Improve existing skills, or acquire new ones!

                                          I have been doing portraits for over 20 years and am happy to share hands-on insight I've gained.


                                          Intro to Pen & Ink Drawing

                                          Start using pen & ink and open a universe of possibilities.

                                          Students will learn about different ink and pen types, when to use them, and how to improve existing pen & ink skills. Techniques covered include various forms of shading, cross-hatching, ellipses, shadowing, layering techniques, mixed ink techniques, composition with ink, dynamic light and shadow, adapting pencil drawings to ink, and more. Pens and paper are provided, but students are encouraged to bring their own pens and drawing pad so that they can practice at home. This is an energetic, hands-on art class for people of all artistic levels. Classes forming on demand. Ages 17+ For students of any level. Improve existing skills, or acquire new ones!


                                          Pointilism with Ink

                                          Adapted from the dot-based works of Monet and other Impressionists, contemporary pointilism uses tiny dots of ink (or other material) to create an image. In this course, students will learn to use black ink to create compositions made entirely out of individually dabbed dots.

                                          We will cover pen & ink types, tricks, and techniques for rendering and fleshing out designs. This is an energetic, hands-on art class for people of all artistic levels. Classes forming on demand. Ages 17+ For students of any level. Improve existing skills, or acquire new ones!


                                          Beeswax Collage

                                          Learn to create exciting, expressive collage pieces with natural beeswax. Hands-on workshop will introduce to you to tools and techniques. Some collage experience is helpful, but not required. Bring your favorite papers, ephemera, cloth, and other materials and produce original pieces during the course of the class. I will also cover finishing touches!


                                          Artist Trading Cards Workshop

                                          Whether you're a fine artist with decades under your belt, or a budding newcomer with lots of ideas, this fun, hands-on class will open you up to a new world of creative possibilities. ACEO (or ATC cards) are a unique type of small format artwork. They are 2 1/2? x 3 1/2? in size (standard trading card proportions) and they can be done in ANY medium! Many artist find the rigid size requirement a rewarding challenge.

                                          What can YOU do with that little canvas? You'll be wonderfully surprised!
